The blue of the south: a bus, a door and a tile

In the villages of Hauran and the Jabal one colour keeps returning: blue on the doors, on peeling walls, on an old tractor, even on the satellite dish.

The back of a rural bus reads “Forgive her if she’s proud”, one of the road slogans every Syrian knows.

Against the black basalt the blue looks brighter, like a window onto the sky.
